Department of Anthropology, PhD Student

My name is Isabel Abarca (she/her), as of Fall 2024, I am a second-year PhD student in the Sociocultural Anthropology program. Broadly, I am interested in migration, identity, and immigrant families and communities in the American South. More specifically, I am interested in Salvadoran migrants and families in North Carolina and intergenerational and transnational experiences with a methodological focus on oral histories and stories, among other qualitative and participatory research methods. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at the College of Wooster and a Master of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Louisville. In my free time, I enjoy working out, traveling, dancing, and spending time with my friends and cats!
